Empathy – you hear the word bandied around but what is it really?
Dr. Google states, “Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference, that is, the capacity to place oneself in another's position”.
A focus in my book (to be released on March 27th, 2021) is on empathy. Don’t get confused with sympathy, empathy is not sympathy. Empathy is being able to sense other people’s emotions and couple this with the ability to imagine what another person may be thinking or feeling.
Then there is compassion which is when you choose to try to alleviate the other person’s suffering. It’s when you ‘put yourself into their shoes’.
“True compassion means not only feeling another’s pain,
but also, being moved to help relieve it.”
I want people to have empathy. Empathy for everyone that is affected by the repulsive actions of a selfish individual. In my case my father. Through what he did the fall out has been huge and it’s not just my immediate family which gradually has imploded. So much hurt and confusion.
I come from a huge family of aunts, uncles, cousins, second cousins and linked to all of them are their extended families. The tentacles of wrongdoing reach out touching many, many people.
Not just relatives are affected but friends of my fathers. Then there are Mum’s friends, my brother and sisters, friends, and my friends. They are all affected in some manner also.
The feelers that the snake creates, spreads between many and never stops.
Stay strong and let’s grow together remembering kind is a BIG word.
